He was attached to 14 Platoon, C Company. He was dropped too far from the drop zone. He met the commander of Company C, Major Dyer, and a few men. They arrived at the Mesnil crossroads later in the day. They fought there until June 9, after which they moved to Bois des Monts to join the main body of the 9th Battalion. They fought throughout the Normandy campaign.
The Merville Battery is a formidable German Army fortification which was located on the Eastern flank of the Allied landings on 6 June 1944.
Bombed several times without success, it was neutralised by the 9th British Parachute Battalion after an assault of unbelievable ferocity.
