He was one of Lieutenant Smythe’s men who were transported by glider. The towrope of the glider broke and they had to land at Odiham airfield in England. They arrived by glider on the evening of 6 June. He took up position at the Mesnil crossroads before joining the battalion at the Château de St Côme. He then took part in the various battles throughout the Normandy Campaign.
The Merville Battery is a formidable German Army fortification which was located on the Eastern flank of the Allied landings on 6 June 1944.
Bombed several times without success, it was neutralised by the 9th British Parachute Battalion after an assault of unbelievable ferocity.
