British non-commissioned officer who served with the 10th Battalion, Essex Regiment in the UK from 1940 to 1942 and then served as a non-commissioned officer and officer with the 9th Battalion, British Parachute Regiment in Western Europe and Palestine from 1942 to 1946.
During D-Day he served with the signals platoon and C Company and led the attack on casemate 3. He participated in the various battles throughout the Normandy Campaign and later trained to become an officer.
The Merville Battery is a formidable German Army fortification which was located on the Eastern flank of the Allied landings on 6 June 1944.
Bombed several times without success, it was neutralised by the 9th British Parachute Battalion after an assault of unbelievable ferocity.
