This tree was planted in memory of Sergeant Philip W. Ward in the memorial garden of the Merville Battery Museum. The latter unfortunately left us in August 2023.

The Merville Battery is a formidable German Army fortification which was located on the Eastern flank of the Allied landings on 6 June 1944.
Bombed several times without success, it was neutralised by the 9th British Parachute Battalion after an assault of unbelievable ferocity.
