He joined the 9th Battalion in March 1945 to reinforce the troops already present, then participated in the Rhine campaign and also fought in Italy. Cecil went to Normandy for many reunion trips and planned to attend the 75th in 2019.
The Merville Battery is a formidable German Army fortification which was located on the Eastern flank of the Allied landings on 6 June 1944.
Bombed several times without success, it was neutralised by the 9th British Parachute Battalion after an assault of unbelievable ferocity.
